Most of the running guides I research advise that you don't need to run the full distance during your training period. I'm sure I'm not the only one however that doesn't work for me mentally!
I need to know that I have done it and therefore can do it again before the big day arrives. I need to build up and then taper as they say but for me, having that distance on the legs as well as in the head makes all the difference on the day.
This is not a 'brag' post, I post this so I can inspire others who utter the very same words as I have over my lifetime...... "no I could never run" then 'no I could never run 5kms" then "no I could never run 10kms" then "No i would never do a half marathon" :) sound familiar?? and look it may never be you, ever, but you know what that's ok too.
